Scottish Dental Show 2014. Event not to be missed!

Scottish Dental Show 2014

It’s a highlight in the diary of Scottish Dentistry so we had to be there!

This year seen a couple of changes for the Scottish Dental Show, firstly a change of venue, now at Braehead Arena in Glasgow, and secondly a slight change of event date which sadly meant that Simon and Agnieszka already had holiday arrangements so were unable to attend with the girls. Amy, Alex and Kerry were there representing YPSDC and enjoying all the show had to offer.

We really look forward to this event and this year certainly lived up to our expectations. On Thursday we bundled into Amy’s car and set off for Glasgow. A good nights sleep just a few miles from the venue meant we were up bright and early and ready to rock the Dental Show.

Arriving at registration we were greeted and registered by a great bunch of organisers. Friendly, helpful and presented with a great little goody bag with a handy little notebook, show guide and of course…. toothpaste.

With around 130 exhibitors we set about visiting every one and seeing what they had on offer and what great new products are appearing on the market to help us deliver your smile! As it was Alex’s first time at such an event she was quite surprised to see the goodies the exhibitors fill your bag with, pens, soft toys, sweets, toothbrushes, torches, anything and everything! A couple which stood out were the DTS stand serving slushy cocktails, rather nice, and the Quick Straight Teeth stand which had a pretty impressive chocolate fountain with a very guilty assortment of treats to smother in it- I would be lying if I said we didn’t visit this one on a couple of occasions, or maybe a few. Others kept you entertained with competitions and games and Amy and Kerry had a successful game of Play Your Cards Right while Alex fell at the first hurdle, unsurprisingly since we are always joking about her unluckiness.

Not only do we see what’s on offer, from whitening products, to dental chairs, to solicitors, to implants to uniforms to training, it’s great for us to put faces to names of people we speak to on the phone or read about in the magazines.

The 2 day show is packed with really interesting lectures from industry leaders and no matter what part of the team you are there is definitely something for everyone. The first for us was the ever important Medical Emergencies. Graeme Ramage the speaker was a familiar face to us as he visited us last year to refresh our skills in first aid. A bit of good news from him was the goverments decision to provide some dental practices with an on-site defibrillator, an incredibly valuable piece of equipment in a situation of cardiac arrest which will be available to the local area as well as the dental clinics.

After lunch the girls split and while Kerry attended Mark Oborns lecture lecture on Online Marketing the two nurses attended one on Quick Straight Teeth for their own information but also to relay back the information to Agnieska now that short term ortho is one of our most popular treatments at the Clinic. A definite for us was sitting in on Ashley Latters presentation. We are familiar faces at Ashleys presentations and the skills we have learnt from Ashley over the past year have been undoubtedly useful.

Day 2’s schedule wasn’t any less busy. Amys radiography lecturer Barbara Lamb was giving a lecture and it was great to meet her as Amy has told us lots about her and is going to be training with her 2-3 days a month until she qualifies around November. We got roped into a little modelling session by a photographer so perhaps we will pop up in a dental magazine soon, checking out some great dental laboratory products.
The organisers worked very hard to make the show a success. It was well organised, easy to find you way about, had plenty happening and I think they will be delighted with how it went.
